As all of us know, our hearing progressively get worse as we age, a condition known as presbycusis.
At 17,000 hertz, which is an annoying buzzing sound to those who can hear it (typically those below 24), it has been weaponised by both ends of the equation : The adults VS the kids.
According to this article, some folks have exploited this fact to their evil ends.
As usual, the adults drew first blood by turning it into a weapon which drives kids away because only kids can hear it. (remember, it's annoying)
Then the kids get their revenge by using the tone as a phone ring tone. Since adults can't hear it, ringing phones became undetectable in schools. Or sort of.
